Adventures in Florida, winter 2015

We left Iowa on January 7th, 2015 with a windchill factor of 20 below zero.  It was a Wednesday and we had just experienced a new seven inch snowfall two days earlier.  Local schools were cancelled throughout that entire week.

Our first two days on the road were cold, windy and hard for our little dachshunds to stand on the ground without their feet sticking.  The first night we stayed in Mt. Vernon, Illinois, the second night was at Chattanooga, Tennessee. The temperature there was still unusually cold.  It was the third day that started to feel warmer and we woke up to sunshine.  Our stay that last night was in Waycross, Georgia at the Comfort Inn.  Great place to stay, although one of our little dogs relieved herself right in the middle of one of our beds!   I guess the stress of travel caught up with her!

All in all, Stella and Grace loved traveling in the car and our trip went more smoothly than we could have imagined.  It was great finally making it to Amelia Island, Florida and arriving at our more permanent residence.  Our condo was perfect for us and we were greater by a heron resting in the pond outside of our new home.

We arrived in Florida on Saturday, January 10, 2015.  We got all of our clothes put away and made a list of items we needed to make our place organized.  We found the best buy in an area rug we picked up at Goodwill for ten dollars!  With all laminate floors, we needed a few rugs to not only warm up the floors, but to relax the dogs!

Before we left, I had searched for churches and found one that I felt suited us.  So, on Sunday, January 11, we went to Christwalk church service.  It was a wonderful experience, music, sermon and the friendliness of the people.  We felt that it was a perfect start to our new adventure!

In the afternoon, we went to the beach and walked with the dogs.  The beach is such a contrast to Oregon.  None of the beautiful rock formations or mountains, just a long stretch of beach that goes forever. It didn't take long for the dogs to remember their love for the sand.  They rolled, jumped and held their tails as high as possible!

Checking out the beach, always a thrill to hear the waves coming in to the shore.  Just a few of the views from our walk with the dogs on this day.
