Journeys Around the West Coast

Sunday, August 11, 2013
We have been in Brookings for about two weeks now.  There have been so many things to see in this area and it is a great spot to travel from to other places.  We are close to Harris Beach which is so striking with jagged rocks in and out of the water.  There is a panoramic view of the ocean and one high cliff that you can stand at and watch the sunset.  North of Harris Beach is Boardman State Park which has a beach that is more secluded and a place to exercise dogs without leashes. Grace and Stella love the beach digging under driftwood, nosing up to other dogs and running near the water.  It is a freedom far from the fields of Iowa.  Moving south of town, there is a harbor with a wonderful RV park and a launching spot for big fishing boats.  There is also a small group of shops and a boardwalk to exercise. This weekend the harbor was hosting a "Pirate Festival" with music, arts and crafts and actors in full dress to entertain the kids.  Moving south, is Crescent City and the doorway to the "National Redwood Forest."  Words or pictures can not describe the beauty of this drive.  Canopies of trees, some laden with moss, some bent over by their time and proximity to the ocean and then the redwoods standing like giants in domination over the land.
